Комплекс методов окраски хромосомных препаратов, позволяющих на основе неодинакового сродства к красителям гетеро- и эухроматина, участков ДНК с различным АТ/ГЦ-соотношением и других особенностей выявлять специфическую продольную структурированность отдельных хромосом, что позволяет точно идентифицировать отдельные элементы кариотипа; наиболее распространены: G-, C-, R-, Q-бэндинг (см.), Д.о.х. с использованием антител antibody differential staining, а также некоторые другие разновидности метода.
